📌 Problem Statement: Unlocking Growth in a High-Value Financial Product

Charles Schwab’s Pledged Asset Line (PAL)—a flexible line of credit backed by securities—had strong financial advantages for high-net-worth clients. However, low adoption rates, friction in the advisor experience, and losses to competitive offerings highlighted critical gaps in product positioning, user experience, and modernization. As Schwab prepared for its merger with TDA, optimizing PAL was a strategic imperative.

I led efforts to uncover the root causes of low adoption, revealing key barriers: an unclear process, lengthy application timelines, and document readiness challenges. By aligning stakeholder insights with customer needs, I shaped a roadmap for PAL’s modernization—streamlining workflows, enhancing transparency, and repositioning the product for greater market traction. This initiative not only improved advisor and client experience but also strengthened Schwab’s competitive edge in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.

🔍 Strategic Approach: Bridging Research, UX Strategy & Business Priorities

To address these challenges, I led a comprehensive strategy combining deep user research, competitive analysis, and cross-functional collaboration with product, UX Design, marketing and development teams.

✅ User Research & Behavioral Insights

  • Conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with Schwab’s high-net-worth clients to uncover barriers to adoption.

  • Led usability testing on the PAL application process, identifying friction points.

  • Mapped out decision-making behaviors for clients considering PAL.

✅ Competitive & Market Analysis

  • Benchmarked PAL against J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and other brokerage-backed lending products.

  • Identified gaps where competitors communicated risk/benefits more clearly.

✅ Product & Feature Prioritization Strategy

  • Developed a feature roadmap to simplify onboarding, improve risk transparency, and enhance education.

  • Used RICE prioritization to align high-impact UX improvements with business goals.

✅ Stakeholder Alignment & Leadership Influence

  • Led cross-functional workshops with product, design, legal, and marketing teams to align on findings.

  • Built a business case demonstrating how improved clarity, process understanding & UX could increase adoption by 20%.

💡 1. Simplified process & increased notifications

  • Designed a clear, user-friendly process flow that mitigated risk while highlighting the entry points and setting up a digital transparent process, improving confidence in the product.

  • Shifted from a call in process to online real-time alerts that saved time and a friction point as funds were needed promptly.

💡 2. Streamlined the Application & Onboarding Experience

  • Reduced unnecessary friction in the PAL onboarding process by simplifying the KYC (Know Your Customer) flow.

  • Auto-populate clients info within the advisors system to eliminated duplicate work and save time rather then overloading companies with work.

💡 3. Introduced Personalized Decision-Support Tools

  • Created a PAL ROI calculator, allowing clients to model potential financial outcomes and hold drafted versions of applications.

  • Designed guided onboarding for advisors to better position PAL to clients and highlight next steps along the process.
